  1. I noticed a quote used by Ralph Emerson that appeared to me. He stated "A man is a method, a progressive arrangement; a selecting principle, gathering his like to him; wherever he goes." This quote has Transcendental elements by stating individuality and its possibilities. In my opinion the progressive arrangement in the quote is ones mind, the method is life and ones personal doings, and gathering his likes or interests to himself or herself. The use of ones independence is shown and ones separation of society that can be rendered any way to someones will. No matter where one goes they will always have their individual selves.

  2. Thoreau says, “In most books, the I, or first person, is omitted; in this it will be retained, that in respect to egotism, is the main difference. We commonly do not remember that it is, after all, always the first person that is speaking” (234). He is saying that if a story is supposed to be second or third person, it is always first person. I agree with Thoreau because no matter what, we use our own opinions an experiences as a reference throughout the story or poem. Although it may not say “I” in the book, it is still written in first person. Basically, his message he is trying to get across is that we can’t get rid of what has happened to us or the past so we always use it no matter what.

  3. One quote that caught my eye was from one of Emerson's works. He states, "A man is a method, a progressive arrangement; a selecting principle, gathering his like to him; wherever he goes." My outlook on this quote is every man is different they have different styles of doing things and express individuality. The progressive arrangement is their mind and how they are independent. At one point, that one man can part themselves from society and show his true colors.

  4. Emerson's quote that i thought appeals to me the most is " A man is relieved and gay when he has put his heart into his work and done his best; but what what he has said or done otherwise, shall give him no peace." (225). This is saying that if a person doesn't put their everything into what they are doing, they won't have as much satisfaction as if they did. This quote is a connection to transcendentalism because it relates to the divine soul. It says " ...when he has put his heart into his work..." it says heart, which, in turn is meaning the body's soul.

This quote is saying that children appreciate and enjoy nature and adults are so caught up in there lives and there jobs that they are so busy they don't have time to go outside like children. This quote is a connection to transcendentalism because it relates to the one with nature enjoy nature love nature and appreciate nature.

  6. The quote written by Emerson that I liked the best is "To be great is to be misunderstood". I think that it means you are only a great person if you are truely being yourself. He is saying that you need to be an individual, trust yourself, and don't follow others. I like this quote because i believe that you should never be someone that you are not. The quote relates to transcendentalism because it follows the tenets of not conforming to society. Also, it is saying you should be able to have free thoughts and value individuality.

  7. Thoreau says, “In most books, the I, or first person, is omitted; in this it will be retained, that in respect to egotism, is the main difference. We commonly do not remember that it is, after all, always the first person that is speaking” (234). I agree with this quote because no matter what everything is in 1st person, i do not think something can be second or third person. I believe this because everything comes from our own experiences. No matter how we write we always think of our past and what happened to us, we always relate things.

  8. Emerson's quote that appealed to me the most was " A man is relieved and gay when he has put his heart into his work and done his best; but what what he has said or done otherwise, shall give him no peace." (225). He is saying that a man in not satisfied until he has put his everything into a project or anything he is working on. If he has not put in his all he will not be fully satisfied because it isn't up to full potential. This quote connects to transcendentalism because it is talking about him putting his heart into it, which relates to his divine soul.Putting your heart into mean you are putting your body's soul into the work.

  9. The quote by Emerson that caught my eye was "To be great is to be misunderstood." I believe that this quote is saying that being yourself is the most important thing. Nothing compares to you and its not about being the best and looking the greatest. Its about being your own person. I like this quote because it reminds me that I shouldn't have to pretend to be something I'm not. Also that my self beauty should be enough, change is not necessary. This relates to transcendentalism because it shows to be you for yourself. Also that you have your option to your own opinion.

  10. The quote that appealed most to me was "to be great is to be misunderstood" by Emerson. This quote basically means that in being yourself people will misunderstand you. People will judge you for being yourself but you should not change because of it. We should not conform to what others think we should be. This quote relates to transcendentalism because one of the tenets of transcendentalism is "valued individuality/non-conformity/free thought".

I agree with him because no matter who tells the story it is always first person. You don't have to say I for it to be first person.

  12. I like Emersons quote "to be great is to be misunderstode." emerson is explaining that if everyone really likes you then you must not really being your true self. Emerson believes that you should accept yourself for who you are. It shouldn't matter to you what other peoples views are about you. So if you are like by almost everyone it shows that you are trying to portray diffrent images of yourself to show to diffrent types of people.

  13. “In most books, the I, or first person, is omitted; in this it will be retained, that in respect to egotism, is the main difference. We commonly do not remember that it is, after all, always the first person that is speaking”. I found this quote appealing because it made me think when i read it. I realized that no matter who the writer is trying to portray himself as, he will always technially be in the first person. This is because the writer is still the one talking.

  14. I like Emerson's quote, "To be great is to be misunderstood". This one relates to Transcendental because it tells you to be a free thinker, to break away from comformity. This quote really means iswhen you're different and liked for it, you are not fully understood by others. You have to be different to be great though. I like this because I think its true.

  17. In Emersons works the quote that I liked the best is "To be great is to be misunderstood". I feel that to be missunderstood is to personalize and be an individual. You are being yourself and that is the best thing about a person. Their is no one like you and everyones diffrent. Dont try to conform to society and blend in with the crowd, everyone has their own voice.

  18. "Imitation is suicide" said by Emerson appeals to me. If you conform to others, you are no longer yourself. Being you is what makes you, you. If you are like others, you're killing your own being. Don't follow others paths, make your own. Imitation is suicide.

  19. Emerson says "To be great is to be misunderstood." In this quote, I believe that Emerson means be yourself truly. Do what you want in life and not what others expect from you. This quote inspires me because being yourself is how you should live your life. Transcendentalism and this quote relate to each other because Transcendentalism means valued individuality, non conformity and free thought. You should be your own person always.

There is a higher value in individuality than one would know.

  21. I really like the "imitation is suicide" quote by Emerson. I think it's so true and is really something to live by. It means that if you imitate someone else, youll kill your own personal identity. So many people are accustomed to society and wanting to conform that we don't truly know who we are. It relates to transcendentalism because you are encouraged to be yourself, trust yourself, and find out who you really are.

  22. The quote "I would rather sit on a pumpkin and have it all to myself, than be crowded on a velvet cushion" is a perfect example of one of Throeau's examples of transcendentalism. The meaning of the pumpkin is through nature being better than the velvet cushion which is an exaplme of materialistic objects. The pumpkin is being used as an alternative to nature in the sense of nature being better than so called "the real life".
