" Yes, suh. I felt right sorry for her, she seemed to try more'n the rest of ' em-'' Page 197. This quote resonates with me because feeling sorry for someone will drive me to do anything I can to help them. Tom feeling sorry for Mayella is due to Tom's caring and father figure side. Tom has children and feels sorry for Mayella's lack of a father figure that doesnt sexually physically or viberally abuse her. Also this resonates with me because Ive alawys had a heart and sympothy for girls like Mayella because its so trajic and it makes me feel lucky for what Im belssed with.
ReplyDelete"I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do." chapter 11. This quote resonates me because, i feel that you should always try. You have to have courage when you do anything. Always try to go above and beyond your expectations and everyone else.
ReplyDelete“But there is one way in this country in which all men are created equal – there is one human institution that makes a pauper the equal of a Rockefeller, the stupid man the equal of an Einstein, and the ignorant man the equal of any college president. The institution, gentlemen, is a court” (205). I believe that this quote from the novel is motivational. This quote resonates with me because I agree that in reality, it is unfair and that some people are just born smarter or into a higher society. In the novel, Atticus establishes this and although Scout doesn’t really get it right now, Jem realizes this. Once, Jem hears the verdict, he loses all hope and finally understands that people are flawed. It proves how even though life isn’t fair, in court we should all be equal.
ReplyDelete"I wish Bob Ewell wouldn't chew tobacco" (217). I feel as thought this is an inspiring quote because Atticus is showing his ability to just brush anything off. Bob Ewell shows his disrespectfullness towards Atticus by spitting in his face and he just ignores it and keep on his way. Atticus has the courage to defend a black man, when no others would have done what he had. It is inspiring because the prejudice people in the world are this way, and it shows what it takes to be able to walk away from such a thing and shows courage in his action. Many people can learn from Atticus, even in todays society, because racism is still a continuing problem. If people were how Atticus is and could brush off such a thing as he did our world would truely have peace and there would not be as much crime throughout our country and world.

One quote that I found to be profound and very inspirational was one by Atticus. In chapter 11 Atticus tries to explain to Scout and Jem what real courage is. This conversation is brought up because of the passing of Mrs. Dubose. Atticus says, "it's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what" (112). I found this quote to be very inspirational because it is used to explain the real concept of courage to these two innocent children. It can also be applied to anyone of any age at any time period.

"Miss Jean Louise, stand up You're father's passin." This quote resonates with me because if I was one of the African Americans that were sitting up in the top balcony, I would have stood up too. Atticus gave everything to try to defend this man against Mayella Ewells and her father but he was defeated. I would have gave him my upmost respect. What he did for Tom Robinson was astonishing and no other lawyer would have done the job like Atticus did. That is why Judge Taylor appointed Atticus for this case. This quote is very inspirational because it is showing that the black community is full of well rounded people who know the difference between right and wrong. - Luke
ReplyDelete"The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a person's conscience"(105) Atticus was saying this to Scout and Jem. He was trying to explain to them why he had to defend Tom Robinson. Actually try to give him a good case. He told them he couldn't go to church and worship God if he didn't atleast try to help this man. I think that everyone should do what they think is right and not do what other people think is right just because they much look at you different'y and judge you. It's not up to other people what you do. Its your decision and your the one that would have to live with the choices that you make.

"She did something every child has done-she tried to put the evidence of her offense away from her. But in this case she was no child hiding stolen contraband: she struck out at her victim-of necessity she must put him away from her-he must be removed from her presence, from this world. She must destroy the evidence of her offense." I found this quote to be profound. I think it's very true. When children do something wrong, they try to hide the evidence. He compares that to Mayella accusing Tom Robinson of rape. She did something wrong and tried to hide it by turning it around on him.
ReplyDelete"...in our courts all men are created equal"(205). I find this quote inspirational because the court is one of the only places where all men are truly equal. There aren't many places in this world where we are all equal, so its nice that Atticus touches upon this. Atticus really shows the court room that they need to take this in account for this courtcase because Tom Robinson is not an equal man outside of this court room. This moment in this book is a profound one and emulates humantiy at its finest.

The quote I can relate to is "yes, suh. I felt sorry for her."(197). Tom Robinson feels bad for Mayella. This relates to me because I'm a good person. I always feel the need to help people. People like Mayella I would love to help because she really needs it. Tom Robinson just has that helping figure. He helps a lot of people. He was more of a father figure to Mayella.

"Miss Caroline told me to tell my father not to teach me anymore, it would interfere with my reading."(17) This Quote is very profound. This quote is saying that the teachers did not want the parents to be teaching the children very much at home. They are probably afraid the parents education is not good enough and they won't learn everything they need to.
ReplyDeleteThe quote that resonates with me is when Reverend Sykes says "Miss Jean Louise, stand up. Your father's passin'"(211). This quote relates to me because it shows how respectful of a guy Atticus is. Even though he lost the trial, the black community still had so much respect for him. This quote shows what a respectful figure Atticus is in the commmunity. He could have been a bad lawyer because he knew Tom Robinson was going to be guilty, but he tried his best. The people in the black community are happpy that Atticus even tried to defend a black man.

A quote that I found profound was Mr. Ewell talking to Atticus in the court room, "Well, if I ain't, I can't do nothing about it now, her ma's dead." This quote resonates to me because Mr. Ewell Is talking about his daughter he has lived with sense she was born. It's stands out because, he is her father. Her father is saying he doesn't know if she's her daughter, and if she isn't, it's too late cause her mothers dead. Now remember, he is In the spotlight being questioned about the 'rape' of his daughter and is now saying he doesn't even know if she is his. It really goes to show how he is uneducated, a drunk, and has no respect or morals. It allows the reader to understand the background life of the Ewells. Therefore, this quote creates unsurmountable background information you need to know about the trial and who the family is. Quote from page 172.
ReplyDelete"Naw, Jem, I think there's just one kind of folks. Folks." I think this is an important quote to this novel. Scout believes that everyone should be equal. Unlike Jem, she doesn't understand why people are subjected to harsh treatment just because of their skin color. This quote demonstrates how different a child sees things. It shows how as we get older, our view of the world changes.

It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do." Chapter 11. I feel that this is an very important quote for this novel the way that it expresses everything. This to me is very inspirational because it talks about your courage and how if you have a gun in your hand it does not make you tough. You have really courage without a gun. Also how you rarely win but sometimes you can win this is always true. That is why I really like this quote.

"In the name of God, do your duty." This is a very inspirational quote because the case is the most important event in the novel. This is moving because of the power that Atticus puts behind it. It's the court's job to serve justice to Tom Robinson, and everyone knows by the evidence what the verdict should be. I think this is also powerful because of the outcome of the verdict. Even though Atticus put his heart and soul into his speech, the verdict ceases to change.

A quote from the book that i thought was inspiring was when Bob Ewell asked Atticus if he was to proud to fight back and Atticus replies "No,too old."(217) This quote inspires me because it shows that you dont have to fight someone to win. Atticus was not going to lower himself to fight Bob Ewell because he believed that you shouldnt fight. Atticus does not freak out on Bob because of what he did. Atticus simply just replied and was actually able to make Bob even more angry.
ReplyDeleteThe quote that I have chosen is when Atticus says to the jury “Which, gentlemen, we know in itself is a lie as black as Tom Robinson’s skin, a lie I do not have to point out to you” (204). I completely agree with this quote because the truth of this trial is plain to see from listening to Tom Robinson’s honest and sincere testimony. This quote is part of Atticus’s main point for his final statements to the jury. This quote really did affect me because Atticus knows that no matter what the situation is a white man will win over a black man in court even if the white man is complete trash, for example Mr.Ewell. The real meaning of this quote to me is that Atticus made this decison for a reason and that was to show how Tom Robinson really is not guilty and the jury knows it, but because Tom was black Mr.Ewell won. -Paloma Rivero
